When flowers bloom in Thailand: the year-round tropical baseline, hot-season flowering trees, the cool-season lotus and flower festivals, and the seasonal highlights worth timing a trip around.

A country that (almost) always blooms

Thailand's tropical climate means something is always in flower — but certain flowers and spectacles have their seasons. A rough guide to timing (with the caveat that nature and regions vary, and climate shifts things year to year).

The seasonal rhythm

• Year-round: orchids (with so many types), bougainvillea, hibiscus, ixora and many tropical blooms flower more or less continuously in the warm climate (orchids, tropical blooms);
• Hot season (roughly March–May): the season of the flowering trees — the golden Ratchaphruek and the flame trees blaze at their peak, turning streets to gold and red;
• Rainy/green season (roughly June–October): lush growth, many blooms refreshed by the rains, and the landscape at its greenest;
• Cool season (roughly November–February): the great flower season for gardens and festivals — comfortable weather brings out temperate and highland flowers, and the famous Red Lotus Sea in the northeast blooms best in the cool early-morning months.

Flower festivals & spectacles

• Chiang Mai Flower Festival: the celebrated festival (typically early in the year, cool season) with spectacular floral floats and displays in the northern flower capital;
• The Red Lotus Sea (Talay Bua Daeng): a northeastern lake that blooms crimson with lotus in the cool season — a bucket-list bloom, best at sunrise;
• Highland gardens & royal projects in the north put on their best show in the cool season;
• Temple lotus ponds reward visits year-round (where to see).
